Traveling to events like Pamplona Running the Bulls has always been a dream, and as an international traveler striving to make the 100 country quota for acceptance into the the Travelers Century Club, we journeyed to Spain. No trip to Northern Spain would be complete without spending a few days in Pamplona. Many attractions are a draw, however, two that got my attention included Pamplona Running the Bulls, and Café Iruña. The bull run in Pamplona is actually in the city’s streets, from the outskirts thru town to the arena. While the Bulls were not trained, and the run was a hair-raising event, then having a cocktail with Ernest Hemingway was truly inspirational. During the Spanish Civil War, Hemingway was stationed in Pamplona as a reporter for US news agencies. Café Iruña was the setting for his bestseller The Sun Also Rises as well as a convenient watering hole where he could commiserate with fellow reporters while having a few tapas. Hemingway asked me “Where do you live?”, and when I replied, “Florida,” he invited me to visit his home in Key West. Since i have been to his Florida home and studio several times, my heartfelt response was that it cost me a $19 entry fee to see his writing studio, but he could always stay at my house, view my writing desk and I would not charge him a penny!
