Finally, a book that details all the basic knowledge about electricity. This book has a great amount authenticated detail, awesome wit and factual references, a lot of photos, and with portions bordering on a deep dive into TOE. Actually, the roots of this edition started with an earlier publication: What is Electricity? and where does it go when it leaves the toaster?
Let’s start,,, Tesla did not invent the toaster! This was invented by Thomas Edison. Nikola Tesla discovered the benefits and power of alternating current vs direct current. And Edison never had steering wheels in his toasters and toasters never killed people (at least never reported), but now, when we hear ‘Tesla’, we immediately think ‘Electric Vehicle.’ Maybe today Edison would ask the question ‘can a Tesla make you any toast?’ If you dialed in ‘Ludicrous Mode,’ would you get flash-toast in 2.8 seconds?

With deregulation, TVA, which had once monopolized the generation and distribution of electricity, suddenly found itself on an alien playing field, rife with looming competition and in need of a real marketing manager, no, an entire marketing department. Now they had to woo their 160+ power distributors and directly-served industrial customers in a seven state area, or lose their business. In dire need of a marketing manager, they hired me.
One early campaign idea I came up with was “You need it, We got it,” and my second brainstorm, “Where else can you go to get it?” was catchy and to the point, but fell on deaf ears.

Artists and Critics say Life imitates Art, but they have it backwards. Actually, Art imitates Life. This debate has been ongoing for decades. The examples in the following pages will take a whimsical approach to the inspiration for works of art and will try to recreate the feelings that the artist may have felt while they created their art.
This debate has a long history. In 1889, Oscar Wilde stated, “Life imitates Art far more than Art imitates Life.”
More recently, Michelle Gaugy, art gallery owner and art critic has argued the same. I don’t believe that’s so. Let’s take a look at the overall idea of art, the creative work of others, in a new and playful light. This should be fun!
Art can be looked at from many viewpoints. It has the power to inspire people to think, feel and act in many ways. It can express social issues, cultural values and lead to changes in society. It displays human emotions in creative ways. The relationship between art and life is interdependent and dynamic.
I will not attempt to write a scholarly treatise about the works of art that are shown here. I will try to find a more offbeat approach. “Art Imitating Life Imitating Art” is a dynamic and continual experience that is photographically portrayed in this book.
(Although, I must admit, there are times when I look at some abstract “art,” I think the artist must have eaten some bad pizza and had too much wine the night before he came to work!)

This book is inspired by many of the great works of art, graffiti and other forms of self-expression I have seen in my travels. I found this image of “Where is my Mind” painted on a wall in Athens, Greece.
Art is all around us. At some point, it was inspired by what an artist saw and felt. It can be a painting on canvas or a scrawl on an alley wall. In either case, for a moment, we have the exciting opportunity to see the world through new eyes.
This book is dedicated to everyone with a rich imagination and eclectic sense of humor. Since each picture is worth a thousand words, I will try to keep my observations to a minimum.
